Daniel Curtin, 50, who has been employed with the town’s Highway Department for approximately 29 years, was arrested this week for allegedly stealing 510 gallons of diesel fuel that was used for a heater in his garage, Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy Sini announced.
The alleged theft of the diesel fuel from town facilities began in August 2015 and happened 74 other times up through Jan. 2 this year. The stolen fuel has a value of approximately $1,023.50.
Sini said that while working as a foreman, Curtin was issued a Ford pickup truck by the town for work-related use. He was permitted to obtain unleaded gas for the truck at various town facilities. His responsibilities never required him to use any diesel fuel, the district attorney noted.
Following his arrest, Curtin was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, grand larceny as a public corruption offense and official misconduct. He was arraigned on Monday and released. Curtin is scheduled to appear back in court on June 18 to respond to the charges.
“We will not tolerate the theft of public funds or government property for someone’s own personal use,” Sini said in a statement.
